Often, many people tend to confuse the disciplines of Anthropology and History. |
This is partly because of the fact that Anthropology seeks to study the evolution of the human race across centuries and that overlaps with that of history. However, the study of history is definitely different from that of anthropology, as the latter is a subset of the former and aims to study the parts that are contained in the study of history.Viewed in perspective, anthropology is concerned with the evolution of myths, religion and folklores of the human race from pre-historic times whereas the study of history is much broader as it deals with these and much more. Hence, the assertion that anthropology is a subset of history.
Further, the study of history often tends to analyze the reasons and causes for the way the human race has developed whereas anthropology is the definition of the entity and the study of phenomenon in them and not as part of a broader sweep trying to explain world events. History often delves into the probable ways and paths that societies take in their development. Whereas Anthropology deals with studying the development of human beings across time and tends to be a bit holistic in approach. This should not be confused with the broader sweep of history as anthropology has a narrower focus in as much as it concerns itself with studying humans and their development.
Finally, anthropologists refer to historical texts and rely on evidence gathered by archaeologists and historians in their attempts to map the human condition.
