People often get confused between archaeology and anthropology, but it is important to note that both these fields differ from each other. These may have certain similarities, but they cannot be considered same as there are also several differences between them. The most important difference between archaeology and anthropology is that the former is a subfield of the latter, whereas anthropology is a much broader term. |
‘Anthropology’ word has been derived from two Greek words ‘anthropos’, which means man, and ‘logos’, which means knowledge. Thus, anthropology refers to the study of every aspect of human beings that includes culture, language, physical aspects and the social developments. Anthropologists are the people who conduct such studies and they are extremely interested in the overall evolutionary process that helps them acquire the complete information about all these aspects of humans.
On the other hand ‘archaeology’ word is derived from a Greek word called ‘arkhaiologia’, which means the ancient history. Thus this branch of anthropology deals with the studies related to historical traces of the human beings. The archaeologists are the people responsible for all such studies and they make use of various historical remains that are left over by the past communities.
Thus, we can summarize by saying that both the fields are different as one is a broader term and the other one comes under the former as a branch of study. The other very important thing worth mentioning is that though they both are responsible for studying human aspects, their studies and approaches are entirely different from each other and thus, their end results also vary greatly.
