Introduction To Social Anthropology

Have you ever wondered about how groups of people behave?

Do you think about concepts like swarm intelligence and the wisdom of crowds? Then, you have a lot in common with Social Anthropologists. Social Anthropology is that branch of Anthropology that studies the behavior of social groups. In other words, it studies how humans interact in groups and the characteristics of group behavior as they apply to gatherings of people.  Further, this branch of Anthropology studies the customs, rituals and practices of social groups and their evolution with time. In other words, it is common for Social Anthropologists to immerse themselves in social groups and report on the unique customs and social organizations of these groups.

Social Anthropology also studies the impact of these social groups on the rest of the habitat and hence it is an intra group as well as inter-group study. The intra group study focuses on the emergent phenomenon that these groups bring to the fore as they interact within themselves. The inter group focus is on violence and conflict between different social groups. Hence, the focus of social anthropologists is wide and far and includes the micro as well as the macro dimensions of social groups.

In this respect, Social Anthropology differs from that of the other social sciences like economics and history as the former is holistic in approach and the canvas broader. Social Anthropology also differs from sociology in its emphasis on studying the group behavior in Toto as well as the differences between the group members. In this respect, it is certainly a unique branch of anthropology.
