Forensic anthropology refers to the practice where the anthropologists are summoned by the court in relation to cases where identifying remains of human bodies in advanced stages of decomposition forms the basis for evidence for or against the alleged perpetrator of the crime.In this connection, it must be mentioned that forensic anthropology is a relatively advanced field and a specialized one at that. This is because this is not something that happens in all the cases or even most of them. There is a tiny minority of cases where forensic anthropologists are called upon to testify for or against the guilty party.

The specialized nature of this field is evident from the fact that there are fewer than 100 forensic anthropologists in the US. And, the percentage of cases where these experts have been called is relatively small in number. However, there are enough grants that are available in the universities for anyone who wishes to take up this field. The US government is encouraging the study of forensic anthropology in a bid to attract more people to the field and be of assistance in solving complex legal cases where advanced expertise is needed to solve the crime. Hence, this should be an incentive for anyone who wishes to specialize in this advanced field of forensic anthropology.
