Architecture Of Independence Hall

The Independence Hall has played a very important role in American history and even today it is one of the most popular buildings of the country and is studied for its unique architecture.

It was constructed in 1730, and was the largest building in Philadelphia at that time. The building can be divided into five parts; and the main block is 105 feet long. The building is covered by two arcades and the two wings, which extend the building, and are 50 feet long each. The building was designed by two people, Andrew Hamilton and the chairman of the building committee. It was built in the Georgian style of architecture. The highlights of the building are its proportion, the balance for its size and the symmetry. The Georgian style of architecture was popular in Great Britain and the American colonies at the time of Kings George I, II, and III. This period was classified to be from 1714 to 1820.

The front side of the north façade of the building is decorated with elegant features like marble panels and keystones above the window. Each window comprises of a carved wooden cornice, and a balustrade that stretches between the chimneys that are present on the roof. The south façade of the building sports a simpler decoration. The main tower consists of a wooden steeple that is resting on the top of a three story brick house.

The Independence Hall was the Pennsylvania State House when it was built. It was here that the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and later many of the presidents of the United States gave their Independence Day speech here. That is why it is called the Independence House in American history.
