Characteristics Of Gothic Architecture

Gothic art mainly comprises of paintings, sculptures, and artistic characteristics in the buildings.

All constructions that were built in the Gothic style were decorated quite ornately with statues, paintings and art work. There were two eras that were totally influenced by Gothic style and architecture in the western and central parts of Europe.Gothic art evolved during the Middle Ages and lasted until the 12th century; and in some parts of Europe it lasted until the seventeenth century. Gothic was a term used by the Italian Renaissance writers.

According to them, it was an ugly invention and they called it Gothic because of the Gothic tribes who were known to be barbaric. The Gothic tribe was Rome’s biggest enemy, and they destroyed Rome eventually in the 5th century AD. This term was used to describe the style of architecture until the 19th century. Later on, Gothic architecture received more critical and positive acclamation. Many modern scholars believe that Gothic architecture had nothing to do with the Goths.

During the Gothic period utmost importance was given to architecture, paintings and everything that was artistic. The principal structures used in Gothic architecture came from the styles of medieval masons. These masons were attributed to almost all the styles of Gothic architecture. They developed ribbed vaults which spread the weight of the ceilings. Or else, the ceiling would have been too heavy to be supported by the walls. The ribs and piers that are used by modern architecture today are adapted from the ancient Gothic architecture.
