Roman Architecture

The Romans were most famous for their architecture.

They had several new ideas for architecture and they introduced to the world three main features in architecture; name the arch, bricks, and concrete or cement. Even today, most of the modern buildings built are made of bricks and concrete and have arches. The arches provide a unique support to walls in tall buildings. In 700 BC, the Etruscans, who came from West Asia, brought their ideas of architecture to Italy. Romans got their ideas from these people. After the Etruscans left, the Romans develop a lot on their ideas and created several great monuments. During the Republic Period, the Romans built temples, basilicas and also built aqueducts, sewers and roads. Their civilization is considered to be one of the most advanced in times when it was unheard of.

Also in the same era, the Romans built amphitheaters where gladiator games were held. The first emperor of Rome was Augustus, and he used marble and bricks for construction. Even today, you find that the buildings built by Augustus have marbles and bricks. The Temple of Castor and Pollex is a fine example of Roman architecture. Augustus had a great-great grandson called Nero and even he undertook several constructions.

One of the grandest buildings of Rome is the Colosseum. The amazing architecture is one of the biggest achievements in Rome. Also, the complicated drainage system that the Romans built spanning the entire city of Rome is an amazing architectural achievement.

Through the architecture of Rome several other aspects of Roman culture can be studied.
