In the southwestern region of Italy, at the opening of the Sarno River Pompeii before it got destroyed was the thriving commercial port of Italy. The occupation in Pompeii first started in sixth century BC and grew progressively over centuries, flourishing with Roman business in 81 BC. The excavation work performed at the site of Pompeii gave an idea about buildings in Pompeii dumped under the ash and mud that includes an amphitheater, a Roman basilica, various temples, hotels, streets, restaurants and gardens within the city precinct. Also, there were private homes built inside the city of Pompeii and during the excavation work there were some corpses found caught in the volcanic eruption which speaks about the inhuman tragedy happened at Pompeii.
The site of Pompeii was first excavated by the Bourbon rulers of Palermo and Naples in 1738 making Pompeii the earliest archeological excavation site among many. In the year 1748, full excavations were started at the site of Pompeii. The archaeologists at that time were passionate to know everything about the city of Pompeii. Famous archaeologists of their time Johann-Joachim, Karl Weber, Giuseppe Fiorelli and Winckelmann were associated with the excavation of Pompeii and it is assumed that a team of archaeologists were sent at Pompeii by the French Emperor Napoleon also. The University of Bradford has conducted excavations on the streets of Pompeii and gathered wealth of images that can be searched on the internet.
