Art has an enormous history throughout the world. It is estimated that approximately twenty seven thousand years ago the cave paintings were made. The history of painting started from the era when men lived in caves. Starting from the caves the further developments have taken this art to postmodernism. |
The major periods in the ancient art history can be found below:
The Pre-historical Period:
The pre-historical period started from 2.5 Million BCE to 800 BCE. This period started with the Stone Age art such as cave painting, petroglyphs and cupules. The famous Mycenaean, Egyptian and Minoan civilizations are the best examples of this era. The pyramids in Egypt showcase high quality sculptures and painting that still exists in Egypt.
Classical Antiquity Period:
The duration of this period was from 800 BCE - 400 CE. The beginning of this century was marked with some great Greek sculptures. Arts in different forms such as sculptures, panel paintings and fresco murals are recognized in this period. This was the period when the Greeks, Romans, Chinese and Indian art begun flourishing in their own way. By this time, the human race became mature, technologically advanced and lovers of art. In this period, the Greek and Roman art continued flourishing.
The Dark Age and European Revival Period:
The length of this era was from 450 BCE - 1400 CE. The beginnings of this period saw the Byzantine art with forms such as Panel Painting, Mosaic art and enlightened gospel manuscripts. The era of Irish monastic art started in 550 and gave the world a unique form of writing manuscripts. This era also marked the use of Oil paints for the first time.
From the year 1400, the traditional arts around the world flourished, progressing with new form of arts. The greatest painter of his time was born, Leonardo Da Vinci in this era. Another name in the field of art is the greatest sculptural Michelangelo. This period is known as the Renaissance period and has recorded a number of great artists, who contributed greatly to the development of the art and artists with some masterpieces.
