The art in Holland flourished in the seventeenth century and the period is called as the Baroque Period. This period did not notice any violent activity and gave time for arts to flourish. Holland as a nation was divided into three parts namely the Southern Catholics, the northern Protestant Dutch, and the remaining was under the Spanish rule.

Protestantism was on apex in Holland at that time. The Catholics acted wisely and started spending handsomely on traditional and religious arts to revitalize the faith in the Protestants. The Bishops, abbeys and big churches employed big artists like Rubens to make an impact on the congregations. Many Hollanders were influenced by the Italian art and artists like Raphael and Michelangelo. Some of the artists undertook training in Italy to achieve mastery. The work done by these artists can be seen till date as they created stunning, big size and realistic memorials that still give messages to the faithful. The Baroque period has noticed some great architecture in this period. Nobles, kings, bishops and rich people at that time employed several architects to construct decorated buildings. The artists in the seventeenth century whether Protestant or Catholic, have tried to incorporate the lifestyle of wealthy people in all the portraits and scenes created. The seventeenth century also registered the use of oil paints made from linseed oil. Oil paints were basically used to get accurate lines. They also mastered trendy concepts and ideas on shading and color mixing.

Philosophers, artists in the society are contributing greatly for the development of art in Holland. Vermeer and Rembrandt, two great artists, created great pictures after exploring the daily life scenes, still life collections and portraits.
