Japan has rich art history that is worth discussing in detail as it has a lot to offer to the world. It is also true that some of the most ancient artifacts that are known to the world belong to this country. The entire historical journey of Japanese art is divided into various eras and they have been named accordingly.

It has been claimed by the country that the earliest inhabitants included a tribe known as ‘Ainu’. This tribe is considered to be responsible for some of the early artifacts of this country. With the passage of time, these people began making an impact on Northern areas of the country as well. The people residing here were known as ‘Jamon’ and further the period was called as the Jomon and Yahoi periods. Jimmu, the first emperor of the country, was succeeded by the Yayoi tribe. There are several remains of the pottery vessels and the clay figurines available that represent the existence of this period. These people were highly skilled towards of making weapons that were usually made out of bronze and copper.

The next era that started around 250 BC is referred to as the Kofun period. This period consisted of several sculptures that used to be found on the tombs. Bronze mirrors of this period have been found by the archeologists. The next era known as Asuka period began with the emergence of Buddhism in the country. This witnessed rapid development of the Japanese arts. Several advanced techniques were also being used under this period. The other following eras of Japanese arts were the Nara, Heian and the Kamakura periods. After passing through all these periods, the modern period emerged.
