Africans used to dance for different ceremonies, rituals and festivals. Marriages and arrival of a new family member were considered very auspicious. People would portray their acceptance and happiness by dancing around. The most important component in African dances was the style. The body was considered a fusion of different segments, therefore, while dancing each segment of the body was subjected to different steps and movements. The shoulders, hips, pelvis, chest and legs were moved separately.

During the 1500s, many Africans were moved to North and South Americas as slaves. This led to a fusion of cultures and African dances were often mixed with the local dances in their adopted land. In North America, Africans were not given freedom to practice their traditions and rituals. Dance took a severe beating during this period. In South America however, they were not severely restricted or prohibited from dancing.

In the 18th century, the Juba, Calenda, Chica and Ring Dance became extremely popular. In the 19th century, the blacks and white danced together in Minstrel shows that were very popular. This gave Africans an opportunity to display their culture and heritage to others.

The 20th century saw the emergence of Jazz, Jitterbug, The Lindy Hop and The Charleston dances in African history.
