Hora dances are very popular in Israel. The word Hora is derived from the Greek word “khoros”. It is a type of folk dance and has its roots in Romania. This dance was performed to honor gods. It was very popular during religious festivals and celebrations. The attic drama originated from Hora dance. |
In Athens, during the festival of the god Dionysus, a circular dance was often performed to please the gods. It was similar to Hora dances and became extremely popular. The attic drama had a speaker who would entertain the audience during intervals. He would sing or speak to keep the audience engaged. Later on, the complete khoros took over this style of singing and dancing.
Hora dances were very famous in Romania during the twentieth century. People would dance outside churches, on Easter Sundays, for weddings and in town squares. The “Hora of the Union” became Romania’s patriotic song in 1859, when Wallachia and Wallachia were untied to form modern Romania.
Hora dance has a characteristic circular motion. People join to form a large circle. They hold each other’s hands and move anti clockwise. They walk, step around, kick and step again. Numerous songs were composed. Bulgaria, Macedonia and Montenegro also practiced Hora dances, but named them according to their culture and tradition.
During the formation of the state of Israel in the year 1946, it was called the Israeli Hora dance and is extremely popular even today in Jewish weddings. It symbolized the feeling of happiness and celebration even during testing times.
