Japanese Dance History

Japan has been associated with dances since time immemorial. It was considered impossible to segregate dance culture from Japanese people. An exact date or period stating the onset of dances in Japanese cultures has not been established. There are numerous myths and tales surrounding different types of Japanese dances. A famous story about a person dancing in front of the cave wooing the big piece of rock to open led to the beginning of numerous ritualistic dances. Religious beliefs also played a crucial role in determining the type of dance.

Bugaku was a famous product exported from China. Japanese immediately endorsed this type of dance and seemed to love every step and movement. It was also performed in the Imperial Court of Japan. Chinese and Korean music were combined together for Bugaku. Dancers also wore beautifully colored costumes like red, green and blue to attract the audience.

Sarugaku was extremely popular in the peasant community on the 11th century. Acrobatic performances and dancing steps were coupled with juggling, making it look more like a circus show.

Later on Kabuki became extremely popular. This was inspired by the Okuni dance forms. Iizumo Okuni is in fact, called the founder of Kabuki. Initially, it was illegal to perform kabuki in public places. It was considered immoral. The style and steps changed tremendously when it was passed on from one generation to the other. Kabuki was used as a tool for telling different stories in an entertaining manner. Initially, it was meant as a form of dance for the men in the society. These days, even women perform various kabuki dances.
