Japanese dances have been passed over for many generations without any modification or variance. In fact, the steps performed centuries ago are practiced even today. The steps are composed according to the beats of the music. |
The relationship between the dancer and his master is an extremely formal and straightforward one. There is absolutely no room for complacency. There are very few words exchanged between the student and his master. In fact, the entire process of learning to dance starts with a firm nod. The student has to quietly stand and watch the expert perform the step. Observation is the key here. After the step has been completed, the student is expected to imitate the same. Comments are generally monosyllabic. Any type of instructions or suggestions is given after completing the practice session. The dance room is treated with a lot of respect and not merely as a place for entertainment.
The entire dance is segregated into different segments. Each segment has a different set of movements. Japanese dances are mainly involved in connecting the mind and body to planet Earth. Therefore, the movements are choreographed in such a way that the person gets his/her rear more towards the ground than towards the air.
Dances are performed during cultural festivals like “Bon”. The main element in Japanese dance is to lower the center of gravity (that is, getting the rear to the ground). The master is treated graciously and respected in a very formal manner. The steps are not changed according to the generation.
