The period of Harlem renaissance witnessed tremendous cultural and intellectual changes during the 1920s and 1930s. African Americans of Harlem were credited for inventing swing dance. The dance also has a natural flow to it. In fact, this dance was invented to provide stiff competition to the European social dances. It was a mixture of Charleston, tap with the famous twists and turns. Previously, African dances either were performed in groups or were solo shows. This was the first African dance that involved two partners.
Jazz music was widely used for swing dances. Its popularity grew tremendously and spread all across United States. People from different ethnicities and backgrounds started dancing to a swinging like motion making it hugely popular among the masses in the 1930s. During the mid 20th century, swing dancing rose to tremendous fame and glory. People from all age groups could master the steps with ease because there were no set of rules to let the body swing.
Linda Hop, Collegiate Shag, Balboa, West Coast Swing and, East Coast Swing were the most popular types of swing dances. All the aforementioned dances have the same root. They are based on the same fundamentals and principles. These dances are often clubbed under ballroom dances. The most notable feature in all types of swing dances is the amount of freedom and free flow the dancer can subject his/her body to.
