The world of graphic designing started when man learnt to express himself through diagrams and symbols. Caves, rocks, branches of trees, bones and stones were common used for designing different items. Stone Age saw the beginning of graphic designing! In the 20th century, William Addison Dwiggins named this ancient form of artwork “Graphic Design”. |
Upper Paleolithic era (4,000-10,000 B.C) witnessed the tremendous use of pictures and graphical representation by our ancestors. It was used for identification. The pictures also depicted the geographical barriers of different tribes.
Egyptians were credited for using different colors from natural dyes to paint figures, trees, animals, etc. In fact, the art of story telling through pictures originated 6,000 years ago. Pyramids have numerous signs and symbols sketched on them.
The Europeans started drawing geographical figures like squares, triangles, etc. as early as 600-250 B.C. The “Book of Kells” in the ninth century AD is a perfect example of advanced graphical designing.
Later on, the world of designing advanced rapidly. It moved over to print media. A German metalworker, Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg, is credited for introducing the concept of printing technology. Here each word could be used repeatedly instead of creating a new word each time. This way, one could have multiple copies of the material without having to design it repeatedly. This would lead to a uniform design without any variations. This type of printing is also called Old Style graphic design.
William Morris developed stylish fonts making each letter unique and attractive. Piet Mondrian invented the popular grid system in the nineteenth century. Invention of computer changed the dimensions of graphic designing and took it an entirely new level.
