If you are planning to paint vinyl shutters keep the following points in mind:
- Firstly, check the surface for any signs if chalking. Here, the surface is mildly coated with a white powdery substance. If you are wondering how to detect chalking, just take the vinyl sheet to a sunny area and carefully run your hands down on the surface. If you notice a white powdery substance on your fingers and palms, chalking has occurred.
- Your next step should be to remove chalking off the surface. This will help the paint to adhere firmly. Clean the surface with diluted bleach to remove any type of mold outgrowth that might have occurred. Allow it to dry under sunlight.
- Use water based acrylic paint for painting vinyl sidings. Vinyl expands and contracts during summer and winter respectively. Acrylic points remain stable during these changes. If you use oil based paints, contraction and expansion will cause the paint to peel off easily.
- Apply a single coat. Allow it to dry and then apply a second coat. This will give the vinyl shutters a complete finish, making it look neat and rich.
- You can apply a paint conditioner for extra protection.
