Face Painting History
Face painting is one of the most interesting and challenging art to master. When you paint on someone’s face, you need to have absolute grip and control over what you are doing. Skin has a unique texture. It is also difficult to bring about the perfect type of shade unless you know the art of painting really well. Most importantly, unlike paper or canvas, you only get one face to paint, so you literally get only on chance. Messing up the person’s looks will not go down well with your client, so you have to be extra cautious. |
The art of face painting dates back to several thousand of years. In United States, the Native Americans looked at face painting from a spiritual point of view. In their culture, painting the face with specific colors like green would automatically give them spiritual powers. They would invariably paint their faces with vivid colors before performing a spiritual ceremony or ritual.
Soldiers used to paint their faces during wars. They would camouflage their faces according to the environment/surroundings to make them invisible from afar. This would help them escape from their enemies. Face painting was also used for hunting wild animals.
It later on became a source of income for painters. They would paint faces of people enacting in plays, dramas, etc. Because these short plays were the main source of entertainment, painting the face according to the character made the drama look realistic and lively. These days, kids are the largest customers for face painters. Having their favorite cartoon character or favorite sports team/flag painted on their faces has become a style statement.
