Astronomy is an ancient science. People from times unknown have been trying to study the stars and the universe. Ever since the human kind has been noticing the sun, moon and the stars they have questioned their existence and how it is possible to see other planets. Also, the passing of time was a big question in mind. After the telescope was invented, people learnt more and more about astronomy. |
Different ancient cultures had different interpretations of the whole sky and the universe. In fact, it is believed that stars and planets were physical objects, a belief that originated in the Middle East. Until then, people in Europe thought that they were the ancestors of the Greek. However, the Greek civilization was the one of the first ones to study about the stars and planet.
In the 16th century, after Galileo invented the telescope, a better understanding of planets came into existence. After that Newton discovered gravity which further gave meaning to the existence of planets and the stars and the moon. Also, it was discovered that the laws of physics is what made the universe the way it is. There have been several astronomers in different cultures who were popular. There were astronomers in the Mayan civilization and the Chaldean. Hipparchus from Greece discovered the equinoxes and their precision and Ptolemy found out that planets were geocentric. Copernicus thought it was Heliocentric later. Kepler described in detail the planetary motions and he was from Czech. Galileo made some great discoveries with the help of his telescope and then Edwin Hubble in 1940 discovered that the universe is an ever expanding place.
