Not many of us know that the Chinese were the first ones to make a planetarium. The Emperor made a big enclosed building that had stars and constellations in it and the person who explains about the stars and galaxies will sit on a chair hanging from the top. |
For the ancient Chinese, the Solar System meant that the dragons were eating up the sun. For the Chinese, the solar eclipse had a very important place. In 23 century BC. the ancient Chinese astrologers started writing books on astronomy. The main feature was the number of the solar eclipses that occurred. The astrologers used the solar eclipse to predict the future of the emperor and the country. In China, astronomers and astrologers worked together. However, solar eclipse is not something that was very reliable and varied according to the geographical locations.
In 206 AD, the Chinese astronomers and astrologers started using the lunar eclipses to predict.
For the Chinese, astronomy and astrology both were government activity and they were mainly sued for the emperor. However, the Chinese did not explore the entire universe and the possibilities of other galaxies existing. Their knowledge on eclipses was tremendous and eventually they became good at predicting eclipses. Some of the Chinese principles used to predict eclipses are used by astronomers even today. They also found out why eclipses occurred and how the earth was shadowed by the sun and the earth. Even the Ming dynasty which was dated back to 13th century had detailed notes about the eclipses that occurred and also how they determined the earth’s rotation was documented.
