What Is Astronomy ?

Astronomy is one of the oldest branches of science in the world. It is the scientific study of the origin and the phenomena of the various celestial objects surrounding us. Researches and developments in this field dates back to as early as the 5th century B.C. in Egypt and also in other parts of the world.

Due to the study of astronomy, the concept of time and thus the ideas of dates, hours, days, years, etc were formed. Earlier, the astronomers and the various observers used to study the Sun and the moon and some of the circumpolar stars- basically those visible to the naked eye, before the invention of powerful telescope, to determine the time and various festivals as well as occurrences like solar and lunar eclipses. Telescope, the most important invention in the field of astronomy, came up in the year, 1611 by Greek astronomer, Galileo Galilei, which paved way for many path breaking discoveries and inventions in the world. Isaac Newton’s improvement on Galileo’s telescope gave birth to reflective telescopes which are still a part of optical telescopes of today.

With the help of telescope, various mysteries surrounding us began to be unraveled, many new planets and stars are discovered every day. One of the most important fact astronomers uncovered in the recent times was that the universe is expanding indefinitely. This fact gave birth to the question of how the universe was formed in the first place. The most accepted explanation is the Big Bang Theory which suggests that the universe was formed out of the powerful explosion of one particle of enormous density. Astronomy is a field that will never go out of vogue as newer researches and discoveries show that there are more mysteries around us, waiting to be uncovered than already done.

What-Is-The-Definition-Of-Astronomy      The scientific study of all the matter -- energy found in the universe, dealing with their origin, composition, distribution and movements is called astronomy. It is one of the oldest branches of science in the world. In the ancient times, astronomical studies included observation of only the sun, the moon and some of the stars and their constellations visible to the naked eyes. This was before the invention and development of telescope. More..
