How Did The Milky Way Get Its Name ?

One of the most interesting galaxies in the universe is the Milky Way and it is also one of the most beautiful ones. When you look at the night sky on a clear night you will see a diffusing light or a band through the sky. It will look like an arc and that is what the Milky Way is.

The Greeks called it the galaxy Kuklos, and it means the Milky Circle. The Romans called it the Via Lactea which means the Milky Road. Now the name for the galaxy is Milky Way. It is called the Milky Way and not a circle or a road because nobody knows its end point and what we can see even through a best telescope is only a very small part of the Milky Way. There is no end point yet discovered for this galaxy.

It was only late in the 18th century that the astronomers discovered that the Milky Way was a huge galaxy of stars. Most people think that the Milky Way itself was discovered only in the 19th or the 20th century for that matter. There are hundreds of galaxies in the universe and Milky Way is just one of them. Why it makes a difference is because it is one of the closest galaxies t the earth and it is something that is visible to the naked eye sometimes. Also, what we see is a very small portion of the galaxy. Astronomers claim that we know les than .0003 percent of the Milky Way, and there are millions of more stars in the galaxy.

The-Length-Of-The-Milky-Way      The Earth is a dwelling of the Milky Way and it is impossible for any astronomer to gauge the length or the size of it. It surrounds us and from the outside it looks like the Milky Way has a spiral structure. However it seems to be spiral based on the observations made from the earth. The size and the shape can be relative in the end. More..
