The Earth is a dwelling of the Milky Way and it is impossible for any astronomer to gauge the length or the size of it. It surrounds us and from the outside it looks like the Milky Way has a spiral structure. However it seems to be spiral based on the observations made from the earth. The size and the shape can be relative in the end. |
Today, with advanced tools and satellites the pictures of Milky Way are being taken and scientists and astronomers are able to understand it better. The scientist believes that the Milky Way can be 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 km in length and it can be one thousand parsecs away from us. One parsec is measured as 3.6 light years.
The exact length of the Milky Way is not known as we still cannot see its complete size. The sun is also not in the center of our galaxy and it is far way from the central point. So calculating the distance or the size gets even more challenging. The Milky Way has been an intriguing galaxy for astronomers since ancient times.
The Greeks and the Romans have all been interested in the Milky Way for a very long period of time and they have been trying to gauge the size of it since times unknown. The Milky was discovered in the eighteenth century itself. However, there is a black hole in the galaxy and other stars were discovered much later in the 19th and the 20th centuries. To explore the Milky Way is impossible even in our lifetime.
