We all learned in our school through out that there are nine planets in the Solar System and even the kids today learn the same thing. However, the fact is that there are nine main planets in the Solar System and several others too. Until a few years ago the understanding was there were only nine planets, and the last one is Pluto. However, the Astronomical Union declared that Pluto is not a planet because it does not behave like one. So now that makes only eight planets in the Solar System now. |
Another possibility is that there could be ten planets in the Solar System or more. However, in order to be a planet, three conditions have to be met and they are the planets have to orbit the sun, they should have gravity, and also they should have no objects in their orbits.
Pluto, however, does not satisfy some conditions and it an actually go out of its orbit also. Even though it is shaped like a sphere it does not still qualify. So Pluto and Eris have been declassified as dwarf planets. The sun is the main object of our Solar System and the planets and the sun share a special relationship. The sun's gravitational pull and the planets' gravitational push keep them in motion in their own orbits. Every planet has a unique gravitational force and they have a unique relation with the sun. The planets are trying to move away form the sun while the sun is pulling them closer. So this pull and push relationship keeps them orbiting around the sun.
