The best way to explore and learn about the Solar System for the kids is through projects. Just like adults wonder what is in the sky even kids are fascinated with moons and stars. Kids are taught early in school about the Solar System and the nine planets. However, since most of it is theory, it is very difficult to explain how the Solar System looks like for them. |
Making kids understand that our Solar System is made up of 9 planets and that these planets revolve around the sun is not as easy as we think. There will be hundreds of questions going on in their mind.
They can either make a pictorial Solar System using cardboards or they can make something using thermocol which represents the Solar System. You will need stationary like cardboard, scissors, tape, glue sticks and some crepe paper, colorful preferably.
Make the children draw all the nine planets. You can download the images from the internet or the sketches. The center should be the sun. Using a compass, draw the orbits around the planets. The first 4 orbits need to be closer to the sun and the remaining get farther. Punch holes on these orbits. These holes will be sued to hand the planets in order. The sun should be the largest and the remaining as the size corresponds. Also, adjust the length of the strings used to suspend the planets so that they seem real. The planets are not actually parallel to each other if you look at the actual diagram.
