The largest moon in our Solar System is called Ganymede. This particular moon orbits the planet Jupiter. It is so huge that it measures 5268 kilometers across and is almost three quarters of the equator. That means it is three quarters of the size of the earth. Ganymede is bigger than Mercury, Pluto and Mars. |
Ganymede is made up of rocks and they are silicate. It has ice and water and also is very rich in iron resources. Some scientists believe it has a saltwater ocean. It may however have been hidden with huge layers of ice. Until the Ganymede was discovered, astronomers believed that Titan was the largest moon. But now because of better technology and telescopes, they were able to discover Ganymede. That makes the Titan the second largest moon in the Solar System.
The Callisto is the third largest moon and it also lies in the orbit of Jupiter. The moon that lies in the orbit of the earth is the fifth largest in the Solar System. The whole study of Solar System can be a very interesting one. There is also a secondary possibility that there may be moons larger than Ganymede also and for some reason not visible now. Until a few decades ago, people believed Jupiter had 16 moons. But now it is discovered that it has 63 moons and the discoveries are still ongoing. Also, there are hundreds of other galaxies existing outside our Solar System with similar structures. Officially as per human knowledge the biggest moon today is Ganymede.
