Natural Selection In Biology

The science of natural selection was discovered and studied by Charles Darwin, who is considered to be one of the greatest biologists. This is a study related to the traits and inheritance in various living organisms, including human beings. According to this theory, living organisms automatically choose the traits that are required for survival and these traits then succeed over generations. This is one of the key mechanisms that has been working since the beginning stages of evolution.

The genetic makeup of all living organism actually alternates from one generation to another. This can be studied using the DNA patterns in the body. The functionality of the theory of natural selection was studied using moths in the United Kingdom. During industrial revolution, the peppered moths that usually existed in light and dark colors were coated by soot due to pollution. So, they became easily visible to the predators. Over a period of time the population of the dark colored moths became more, and the later generations had only dark colors.

The characteristics of any organism are made to suit its survival. Even in humans this rule applies. Plants and animals both choose their partners in such a way that they can exclude the traits that are not suitable for their survival. Initially, this study created a lot of upheaval and did not find acceptance.

The theory of artificial selection also exists where humans control the selection of partners of plants and animals for obtaining various results. The same traits were observed naturally also in plants and animals.  The theory of natural selection is the basis for several biological studies even today.
