Chemistry Terminology

It is helpful to know the basic chemistry terminology so that you can understand about basic chemical reactions that occur all around us. The study of chemistry is basically dependent on the study of atoms, molecules, elements, compounds and mixtures. An atom is the smallest particle in nature and it is found in molecules. Every single molecule in the world is made up of at least two atoms. It is further possible to split atoms using nuclear force in modern technology.

Atom is the basic unit in a chemical formula. The Greek believed that everything in the world is made up of atoms. Atom is also a Greek word.

A molecule is a composition of two or more atoms. These atoms are joined chemically, and they can be revealed through a chemical formula. Every molecule has the capability to react with another molecule. These molecules are present all around us in the form of gases and other compositions. Even water is a combination of atoms.

Elements are present in the nature, and they can be made up of a single kind of atom or they can be joined as molecules. There are many hundreds of elements known to science. For example, argon is an element and carbon is an element.

A compound is a substance that is made up of more than one kind of atom and is chemically joined together. The atoms may not be similar to each other; instead they can be completely two different types like hydrogen and oxygen.

A mixture is a substance where two or more kinds of atoms are mixed together, but they are not joined chemically. That means there is no reaction amongst them.
