Causes Of Acidity In Water

When it comes to checking whether the water is acidic or alkaline in nature, one has to check the pH of water. If the pH of water is less than 7, then the water is acidic, while if the pH is more than 7, it is alkaline in nature. Usually when water is acidic, it is corrosive and not potable.

Many people living in certain areas where water is acidic tend to get their water tested. This is important as the acidity of water can corrode the plumbing system of a house. Also, acidic water tends to have a high concentration of leached metals like copper, cadmium, zinc, iron and lead. If the water is acidic, proper treatment measures can be put into place to ensure that the pH of the water reaches a neutral range. This can be done by using filters that neutralize the pH or using neutralizing solutions likes soda ash.

As acidic water tends to leach away the metals from the plumbing system, the water has a characteristic color. For instance, if the house uses copper pipes for plumbing, then the water will have a bluish green color. If the piping system in a house is of iron, then the water will have reddish tinge to it.

Water can turn acidic due to many reasons. Invariably ground water becomes acidic when it has not been replenished on a frequent basis. This replenishment happens with rainfall. Also, highly polluted areas where there are too many industries can cause ground water to turn acidic as effluents flow into water bodies and contaminate them. Acid rain in polluted areas can also turn ground water and other water bodies acidic. Thus, there are many causes for acidity of water and all have to be tackled in order to ensure that water is potable and does not harm plants, animals and humans.
