What Does A Hydrogen Atom Look Like ?

All elements are made up of two basic parts -- a central nucleus and electrons. These basic parts are also present in a hydrogen atom. However, when you compared a hydrogen atom to other atoms, there are some basic differences which set the hydrogen atom apart. For instance, the nucleus and the electrons have properties are specific only to the hydrogen atom.

Hydrogen is the most prevalent element in the world. Its atoms are light and small when compared to atoms of other elements. Hydrogen atoms are known to make up around ninety percent of the total number of atoms present in the entire universe. Hydrogen is main part of most astronomical objects. However, in its gaseous form, hydrogen is quite rare on Earth. So, if we want hydrogen gas, it has to be manufactured using compounds that contain hydrogen ions.

The protons and electrons form the central nucleus of an atom. They are also responsible for giving an atom its mass as the electrons hardly have any mass. One unique feature of hydrogen atom is that it does not contain any neutrons in its nucleus. Instead the nucleus of a hydrogen atom consists just of one proton. However, sometimes, some hydrogen atoms contain neutrons, up to one or two. If the hydrogen atom has one neutron, it is called deuterium, while the atom with two neutrons is called tritium. Deuterium and tritium are quite rare in the universe, but a minute fraction of deuterium can be found in the oceans of the Earth.

The weight of a hydrogen atom is one and this is based on the number of protons present in one atom. As the number of protons is always the same as the number of electrons, it can be said that a hydrogen atom will also contain one electron.

What-Does-An-Atom-Look-Like      An atom consists of three subparticles, which are known as protons, neutrons and electrons. The protons and neutrons form the central core of an atom, known as the nucleus. While electrons form a cloud around the nucleus. The protons are positively charged; the neutrons carry no charge whatsoever; while the electrons are negatively charged. More..
