What Does An Atom Look Like ?

An atom consists of three subparticles, which are known as protons, neutrons and electrons. The protons and neutrons form the central core of an atom, known as the nucleus. While electrons form a cloud around the nucleus. The protons are positively charged; the neutrons carry no charge whatsoever; while the electrons are negatively charged.

For centuries mankind has been endeavoring to learn What Does An Atom Look Like ?. There is evidence to show that the study of an atom's structure was done in ancient India as well as ancient Greece. It was in ancient India, in the 6th century, that the atomic theory was formed. However, the credit for claiming that atoms are responsible for forming all objects and matters in nature goes to ancient Greeks.

Nonetheless, it was in the early part of the 20th century that physicists studied the old theories of particles and then found out that all atoms have different properties. This led the scientists to discover isotopes, which are atoms that part of the same element but are still different.

Thanks to all the studies done by physicists, today we have an inkling as to What Does An Atom Look Like ?. An atom has a nucleus, which consists of protons and neutrons. Around the nucleus, there is a cloud of electrons moving around invisible paths known as orbits or orbitals. Electrons have properties that are similar to waves, so instead of being like miniscule specks, electrons look like beams of light. The opposite charge of protons and electrons ensure that they are attracted to each other and thus, stay close to one another. The electrons are always in a state of motion. Neutrons have no charge, but do play an important role in atoms that have uneven electrical charge. They help to balance out these atoms. A good example is that of helium. In a helium atom, the nucleus has 2 protons and 2 neutrons, and this helps to keep the nucleus of the helium atom together.
