Who Discovered The Atom ?

Atom is derived from a Greek word which means indivisible and the ancient Greeks had a strong faith that every matter present in the universe was made up of atoms. They believed that the last smallest piece of any matter, however small it may be, was atom.

But later on, it was found that Greeks had no scientific ground for coming to this conclusion and hence, it was not accepted as the fact. It was just a philosophical idea. The concept of atom drawn by the Greek ancients is very different from the concept known today.

In the year 1803, John Dalton, an English chemist and mathematician became the first man to develop the concept of atom on scientific basis by developing an atomic theory. He did the experiment with utmost care by weighing up the samples of many different gases and found out the differences in the weight of each sample. After performing this experiment carefully he reached on a conclusion that any matter be it sold, liquid or gas were consist of exceptionally small particle and termed that tiniest particle as atom.

Dalton made it clear that atom i.e. smallest particle of any matter had different weights by proving relative weights of any atoms. He proved this scientifically. But he could not explain the definition and function of atom.

Almost after a century, another Englishman Ernest Rutherford explained the atom with the help of a theory which was very similar to the solar system by keeping a positively charged heavy nucleus in the center which was surrounded by electrons, which was considered to be negatively charge.

In today’s world, it is to be believed that atom is made up of electrons, protons, neutrons, positrons, neutrinos, mesons, and hyperons. In the core of the atom, 20 dissimilar particles have been found, but till date not a single picture of atom explains its look.

Why-Do-Atoms-Bond      Atoms bond together to get full its valence electrons all the atomic shells. For maintaining a stable electronic structure within the atoms, in which some of the atoms have more electrons have to lose the extra electrons. For losing, atoms have to search another atom which requires extra electron. More..
