Base or alkaline is a chemical substance which can dissolve in water. However, the term alkaline is also applied for battering and on various foods in differentiating acidity and basicity. |
Base is also defined as an ionic salt made up of positively charged ion of an alkali or an alkaline metal in the company of negatively charged ions. These bases have Ph more than seven. When dissolved in water bases produce negatively charged OH- (hydroxide) ions.
Alkaline Battery is very popular among batteries due to its constancy, long shelf life and permanence. It is composed of zinc powder negative terminal and manganese dioxide positive terminal. Alkaline diet is the food which is less acidic in nature. The alkaline diet helps in reducing weight and enhances health. It mainly consists of leafy green vegetables and citrus fruits such as orange and lemons. This conclusion has been drawn from the early life of humans, when they were hunters and consume mostly alkaline foods. Today’s foods are more acidic and have an adverse affects on health.
The base is detected by the existence of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal ion. Lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium are basic metals and beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and barium are the alkaline earth metals.
Alkalis are slippery and sour in taste. Low pH bases are used in soaps and cleaners. Bleach is also an alkaline substance. High pH alkalis can cause caustic burns when comes in direct contact with skin. If soil and ground water become alkaline then it can destroy flora and fauna in that particular area. Suitable acidic substance should be used for neutralizing the area.
