Steel is an alloy that is made using carbon and iron. There is very less carbon content in steel. Steel is also made with chromium and iron. This is the most common type of steel you find actually. The rich color comes from chromium and the solid make comes from iron. Steel made with carbon will have several other elements such as manganese, chromium, tungsten and vanadium. |
Carbon actually acts as an agent to harden the elements. Steel is considered as a versatile metal because it does not wear out easily and also is very long lasting. It does not change its quality when heated up. That is why several people prefer to cook in steel because the food's flavor is not lost and does not get mixed with the flavor of the metal.
Steel is very different form wrought or cast iron. These other types of iron have a very low melting point. Steel has a very high melting point. Steel is used in several industries. It is used as railings and even in construction material. One of the biggest industrial applications of steel is in infrastructure. It is widely used in this industry to build bridges and as a support for big structures because of its versatile nature. Steel cannot be corroded with water. The protection for steel against corrosion comes from chromium.
The second largest industry to use steel is kitchenware. Almost all kitchen utensils and other tools are made out of steel. Even the tools like screw drivers and wrenches are made out of a combination of iron and steel. Steel also does not rust easily.
