An element is a substance that is made up of one single kind of atom. For example, hydrogen is an element that is made up of one single proton and one electron. In case you change the number of protons or electrons, then you will get a different kind of element. In other words, the element is the smallest part of a substance and it cannot be divided further. It cannot be changed in its properties and in case you change, it will completely become a different element. Some elements cannot be changed. |
If you look closely at hydrogen element you will always find protons and electrons only. In case you add neutrons, then they become isotopes which are another kind of hydrogen element.
There are several different kinds of elements that we can see in nature. Some of them are water, hydrogen, silver, copper, gold, and carbon. We hear of these elements almost everyday in our lives. Some of the elements like gold and silver are considered ancient and they have been known to man for several thousands of years. People always have worked with these elements and are well aware of their properties.
The discovery of elements such as gold, silver or iron cannot be given to any single person. Several countries like Egypt, Persia, China, India and Rome were using gold especially for several things. Even today, newer elements are being discovered and are being credited to individual scientists. Substances like Teflon and tungsten are more modern discoveries and ca are credited to some people.
