An automatic car is the simplest form of vehicle one can learn to drive. Almost all the functions are automated. The gear, or the shift stick as we call it, has simple functions. You should know these in order to learn how to drive an automatic car. |
When you are ready to drive, you need to start the car and put it on D, which means Drive, and you are ready to roll. If you want to back up you should press down the clutch and change the gear to R, which means reverse. When you want to keep the car on and stay in one place, you need to idle the car and put it in N, which means neutral. These are some of the basic functionalities that you need to know to drive an automatic car.
However, when you are driving, the car automatically adjusts the gear speeds. Some cars also have the cruise option, which keeps you on a hands free mode. If the freeway is empty enough, then you can try the cruise mode and relax. The car can take care of the rest. However, putting the car on cruise mode on an empty road would be futile as you would need to constantly maneuver the steering. You should get a good grasp of the steering control to be good at driving.
When you are about to learn how to drive an automatic car, first learn to control the steering wheel. Once you are able to get a good control on the car and are maneuvering right, then learn to handle the gears. At the last learn how to reverse the car because reversing the car needs a good sense of judgment. And, at the very end, learn how to park because this is when you will actually end up banging the car!
