History Of Japanese Medicine

The Japanese medicine became scientific and westernized very quickly even after an unhurried initiation and has grown rapidly with time. In the ancient period illness and diseases were considered as to be sent by the gods or are created by the power of evil spirits. There were no treatments and drugs available at that time, rather people depended on prayers, religious practices, exorcism and incantations.

In the year 608 AD, Japanese physicians of young age were sent to China to study the medicines and treatments. Chinese medicine supremely dominated the Japanese medicine. The oldest Japanese medical work still exists, which is available in thirty volumes written by Tamba Yasuyori in the year 982. The work stresses on the effects of diseases and treatments on the body organs and parts. It is completely based on the old Chinese form of treatment and medical works, covering the essential hypothesis of disease with the Yang and Yin supposition.

Menase Dosan issued a fifteen volume medical work to publish in the year 1570. He also contributed at least 5 other medical relate works. An important manual was released in the year 1574 that referred to practice of medicine named as Keitekishu. It almost described and classified fifty groups, diseases and the rare symptoms. Nagata Tokuhun is another name in the history of Japanese medicine, an instructor and doctor very prominent in his period and wrote books like Baika Mujinzo and I-no-ben. He came up with an ideology that physicians cannot treat the patients unless they have some mutual aid from the patients.

In the sixteenth century Jesuit missionaries introduced the European medicines in Japan and later, in the seventeenth century by the Dutch. In the eighteenth century translated European books on internal medicine and anatomy were made available to the people of Japan. The result came soon in 1836 as work on Physiology from important Japanese people appeared.
