Karok Indians are sometimes known as “Karuk”. This name is famous for the Quoratean family tribes and is better known by the same name. They lived on the coast of the Klamath River, The Indian Creek, North West California and the Redcap Creek. |
The Karuk Indian tribes were always surrounded by other tribes such as the Yurok and Shasta Tribes. They were separated naturally by the rest of the world through the Athapascan Tolowa and the Siskiyou Mountains. The Shastan tribes had control over the tributaries of Klamath River like the Salmon River, whereas the Karuk’s were having complete control over the Klamath River. The fundamental language of these Karok tribes was absolutely different from that of the neighboring tribes the Shasta and the Yurok tribes. The traditions, beliefs and ethnicity of the Karok tribes were similar to these two tribes; even any valuable aspect could be related with these 2 tribes.
The Yurok and the Karok tribes can be distinguished only by observing two facts. The Karok’s do not create canoes but purchased them from the Yurok’s in the shortage of redwood. Karok’s celebrate yearly rituals at places such as Inam, Panamenik and Katimin calling the ceremony as ‘making the world’. Whereas the Yuroks were exactly opposite to the Karok’s that strictly did not allowed any such activity. There was no division of classes, status in the Karok tribes other than the villages, where whole of the Karok tribe resided. There were several villages under the Karok tribes; they had vast territory under their control, which was further extended. The Karok territory was divided into 3 groups, every group having various numbers of villages and among them an identified village, where the famous Karok ceremonies were held. Panamenik with other territories formed the 1st group near the Orleans Bar and the 2nd group was on the opening of the Salmon River. The 3rd and most important group was at the Inam near the Clear Creek.More Articles :
