Japanese Dance History

Japanese history of dance is assumed to have started from the ancient Japan. There are several stories associated with Japanese dancing. One of the Japanese tales narrates that Amenouzume no Mikoto danced to open the gate of Amano Iwato where Amaterasu Ohmikami hid. The infamous Japanese dancing style “Kagura”, the most spiritual and numinous style is supposed to have emerged from this story.

Two forms of dancing “Gagaku” and “Bugaku” are supposed to be inherited and then brought from China, while two other forms like “Sarugaku” and “Dengaku” were created to entertain the farmers in Japan. The unique Japanese art of dancing called as “Nohgaku” came into existence and it is assumed that “Nohgaku” came to persuade “Kabuki” another form of dancing in Japan.

“Nenbutsu Odori” an old form of dancing by Iizumo Okuni is said to be predecessor of the current form of dancing in Japan. It is assumed that Izumo Okuni was the initiator of the dancing form “Kabuki”. “Okuni” was a form of dance that has its basis in cultural dance and is dissimilar from “Nohgaku”. The current Japanese dancing and “Kabuki” are said to be similar form of dancing and later the Cyprians in Japan adopt “Kabuki” for entertainment of their customers which was passed onto the descendants. It was thought to be dissolute during the phase of Edo and was abandoned. However, still “Kabuki” was carried by the descendants after the abandonment of this dance.

“Kabuki” was an ordinary form of dancing, but some extraordinary steps were added to perform the act with grace. Another form was brought to Japan known as “Ryuku” that then got altered to “Shamisen”. Later advancement of music and storytelling performances became the spotlight of the performances. Till today the Japanese culture still reflects these forms of dancing, may it be the style, music and theater management.
