Infants are babies that sleep all the time, and this is the understanding most parents and others have about them. Also, people believe that they are only good enough to cuddle and fuss over. However, from an infant’s perspective, their life is a constant struggle to learn newer things. |
They are in the process of growing up and they are learning things about the world from the day they are born. Never underestimate the power of learning in an infant. Suddenly by the time you they turn 18 months old you hear them babbling. Even this babbling comes from the knowledge of making sounds that they have heard. Infants learn a language by learning to recognize the sound.
However, the babbling is a result of imitating the sounds that they have learnt right from birth. Soon enough the babbling turns into words and sentences. This is how infants learn languages as they grow up.
Some studies show that the more a child or a baby is exposed to newer languages, the more intelligent they become and also learn several languages. This ability of learning newer languages continues as they grow up into adults. Parents should actually expose their babies to newer languages through audio and video media. Children who watch interactive programs in Spanish or French tend to pick up these languages also. However, the first language that they will learn to talk is the language that is spoken in the house. For some it is their mother tongue that can be English or Spanish or any other language spoken by the parents at home.
