Example Of Foreshadowing In Literature

Prediction of future written by authors through literatures is Foreshadowing. To realize the importance of foreshadowing in literature students must understand the philosophy behind authors view. Foreshadowing needs vision to understand the aspects in writing. A story written by Daphne Du Maurier gives an insight of the future named as “The Birds”.

The story begins with the month of December stating about the winter season, the winds that blow overnight and change the atmosphere. The lead character of the story observes and narrates about the quantity of the birds. More birds are there than usual, courageous enough not noticing the vibrations of the farm vehicle. It is not needed to explain that these birds are courageous and spirited. This story does not require a mastermind to find out the moral behind story. This is a good example of foreshadowing that contributes greatly in explaining the worrying humor.

Edgar Allen Poe narrates a short story that shows the example of foreshadowing. The Cask of Amontillado states about the injuries given in thousands of Fortunato, which could be borne in the superlative way as he can. It says he swears vengeance when Fortunato will insult. He guesses that he could be horrid and does not know what is going to happen. This teaching contains an excellent lesson that includes foreshadowing. “Return of a Private” by Hamlin Garland states there are no well dressed ladies, no hands to shake at the station for those returning from the Civil War. The purpose of writing these lines is to draw the conscious of readers from the playfulness and the uselessness of wars. The students should be capable enough to classify foreshadowing. It is very simple to mug up a definition but it is sometimes really difficult to explain the same with examples. Mugging can be done easily by kids too, but explaining the same really needs maturity.
