Modernism Literature

All the literary eras of the world are modern in own judgments. Even the fifth century primeval Greeks considered themselves as modern. Romantics during their period thought they were the most modern in all societies of the world. Later, the Romantics were discarded of being modern by the authors of Realism because they saw themselves as the modern class of all societies.

In fact we do not have any perfect term to describe the literary period in which we breathe. We call today’s literary works as modern that was written after the First World War. It will take a little effort to look down the literary era we exist in to suggest a good name for this era. By the time any new name is suggested it is better to call it as modern so there is no misunderstanding and dilemma.

Some of the great events in the history of the modern world have changed the face of the world and related terminologies. The First World War lasted from 1914 to 1918 and the Second World War lasted from 1939 to 1945, these wars overwhelmed the health, wealth, hope and enthusiasm of people throughout the world. The development taking place throughout the globe can be seen as industrialization and technology are increasing day by day affecting tremendously to the environment.

It is said that the modern literature has been derived from the European literature and has developed as a response to Naturalism and Realism. The modern era literature is considered to be made up of 4 ‘isms’ to a response against Naturalism and Realism they are Nihilism, Impressionism, Surrealism and Expressionism. Some scholars see these 4 ‘isms’ or literary activities in the modern era literature. These 4 ‘isms’ express characteristics of modernism in literature that focuses on the psychology of an individual and reviews the work done in art, whether it is logical enough to study.
