Before knowing how many types of literature are there, let us first understand what literature is. Literature basically refers to anything written creatively to matters which are more scientific or technical in nature. However, the word is commonly used to describe the creatively written languages of poetry, fiction, drama and nonfiction. |
There are many types of literature.
- Prose Literature: Journalism, philosophy, fiction, fantasy writings and history comprise the prose literature.
- Myth: Myth is usually something borne out of imagination of the writer and seldom has any connection with the real world.
- Short story: A compact commercial fiction, maybe real or imaginary is called a short story.
- Novel: This is a type where one can put in a lot of details and play with words; introduce multiple plots and schemes, etc. It also has many subdivisions.
- Folk Tale: These are traditional tales, which have been brought down from ancient ages revolving around ancient religion, magic or superstition.
- Poetry: Arguably, this is a harder form of literature where compaction of thoughts is of utmost importance. Along with this, there should be a continuous flow and rhythm to the language. There are many types of poetry like, Sonnet Ballad: Elegy: Ode: Allegory: Epic and Mock epic Lyric.
- Nonfiction Literature: This is the type of literature which revolves around facts. Again there are many subdivisions of this form of literature.
- Biography and Autobiography: A biography is the detailed account of a usually famous person written from the point of view of the Author, while an autobiography is the narration of the accounts of one’s own life through his own words.
- Essay: These are a general observation of anything from the author’s point of view.
- Literary criticism: It is the critical analysis of any other literature.
- Diary and Journal: Both are a way of putting many events and happenings in a sequential manner.
- Newspaper: This includes a collection of all the happenings and current affairs around the world.
