What Is A Critical Literature Review ?
Critical literature review is a detailed analysis of any piece of writing by an author. It describes what the literature is all about and what all are its positive and negative points: how the literature could have been improved, etc. these reviews can be descriptive or short and to the point. |
There are many general guidelines of writing a critical review.
- More than a mere summary, the review should contain the author’s own comments and suggestions.
- The author should mention all the relevant details of the literature, like who wrote it, what is the main theme or subject of the matter, when was it written, etc. before proceeding to review it.
- The author should research and fully understand the source content and related matters to it thoroughly before starting to write its critical review.
- Before writing, the critical review author needs to understand who his target audiences are and if needed, survey them to understand their likes and dislikes.
- Every argument, comment and criticism should be backed with a valid reason. The author should in no way show any sort of personal biasness towards the source article or its author.
- Quote another author or any other article if that is relevant to the review. However, the author who is been quoted should be informed prior to this seeking his permission.
- There should be an element of comparison in the critical article. However the comparison should be reasonable enough and strictly pertaining to the topic of discussion.
All these comprise a good critical review. However, the author should bear in mind that his own critical piece can also be subjected to further criticism. So it is essential to write responsibly.
