Literature is a compact written work centering on any particular topic or theme. Irrespective of the place a literate child comes from, he or she has, to some extent, has been taught about literature. However, it may or may not be English literature but literature of any language, most commonly the mother tongue of the child. Literature is of utmost importance in shaping the character of a child, helping him with his speaking, writing, listening and reading skills which are essential in every walk of life. |
Right from prose, poetry, essays, drama, to technical writing of business deals and logistics are all a part of literature. The British novelist, C.S. Lewis rightly said, "Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it”. On close observation, it can be seen that it is literature which alone can satisfy our thirst for knowledge. If man had to depend solely on spoken words and there would have been no written documents anywhere in the world, people had to reinvent things already existing, to build up something from the scratch, he would have to strip down another of a similar things to its source objects (which many times is not possible, like in case of chemical reactions), and rebuild them. All these because with absence of literature, no written manual indicating the ingredients required, the process would be available anywhere! We find this kind of situation hard to imagine, let alone believe because unknowingly we are so much depended on literature.
