Swing Music is an up-tempo, joyous kind of music with full and wide sound, backed by a forward-driving momentum. The music usually has 4/4 or 4/8 timing with importance being given on the beats which are even. The word, “swing” is often referred to the swing jazz music, which was very popular in the US in the 1930s and 1940s. |
During the initial times, swing music was made popular by artists like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, The Dorsey Brothers, Fletcher Henderson, Gene Krupa, Artie Shaw, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Earl Hines and Glenn Miller among others. This music then gained popularity by the next decade when the whole of United States were grooving to it.
Swing music’s popularity began to dwindle by the time of Second World War. This was because many of the good musicians had to go overseas because of the War and few were left in America to carry forward this music. This made it all the more difficult to pull together a “big band’ and present them to the world.
A revival of this swing music took place in the 1990s when bands like the Royal Crown Revue, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy make into the scene. Though this revival period ended as quickly as it started, still this musical form continues to entertain a sect of music lovers in the US still now.
However, these days, a new type of swing music is heard mainly in Europe called the Electro Swing. It is basically the concoction of the good old swing with the relatively modern house and hip hop techniques.
