What Is African Music ?

Music of Africa is not only played for recreational purpose but they are also an integral part of their customs and rituals and thus they are serious about it. The traditional African music has a deep root in their mythologies, culture, folklore and legends. African music reflects the ancient, culturally rich history and heritage. Dancing often forms an important part of their music and its related rituals.

Traditional African music is vastly different from other Western music, especially in their notations. The African musical instruments also reflect their safari culture. They are made up of horns, tusks, conch shells, gourds or wood. Drums also form an important part of African musical instruments but those drums are wholly different from the modern kind of drums that we use today. African drums are much larger in size and are much heavier than their American substitute.

The rhythmic part of the music of Africa unifies its various areas and groups. Similar pattern rhythms are common throughout Africa. By singing in thirds, fourths and fifths, keeping parallel to the actual melody, typical harmonization is created.

Even though the world associates African music with just drumming sans melody, melody actually forms an integral part of many Afro societies. The mbira can be considered the most melodic of all the instruments in Africa. This instrument is used on both entertaining and religious occasions in Africa.
