Santayana considered himself to be a naturalist and thus, he strove to fight idealism and called philosophy literature. In fact, due to his Hispanic roots, Santayana was able to capture many aspects of the American way of life that most insiders missed out on.

When he only 8 years old, Santayana wrote a piece in Spanish entitled Un matrimonio, which means A Married Couple. This story was about a newlywed couple who get to meet the Queen of Spain. He was also a poet of some class. His first book in fact was book of poems. Santayana was responsible for refining the philosophy of naturalism by getting the teachings of Plato and Christianity into one framework, but he ensured that he left out the dogmas and God out it. While he did not leave writing poems, Santayana was primarily interested in philosophy and its relationship with art and literature. This is what philosophy of Santayana tried to capture via his writings, and one of his pieces The Sense of Beauty penned in the year 1896 was the foundation for the study of aesthetics.

Later on, in the year 1900, Santayana formed an opinion that poetry and religion were an expressive way to celebrate life, and both should not be mistaken for science, or else they would lose their beauty.

On the other hand, Montague was a logician and a philosopher. Where mathematical logic is concerned, Montague is a well-known figure even today due to his contribution to proof theory, axiomatic set theory, model theory and recursion theory. However, Montague was also famous for applying logic to solve a number of philosophical problems, including philosophy of language.

Montague was responsible for developing a logical and exact explanation of semantics, syntax and pragmatics for formal and natural languages using the principles of philosophy. He believed that formal languages could be described in a formal manner using techniques of logic, and this belief was considered to be a radical one during that time.
