Political science is a very new addition to the social sciences, at least in its current avatar, with political science as we know it today arising only in the mid 1800s. |
But the study of politics, if not exactly the political science of the 21st century has existed since 1500 B.C in ancient India and Greece, which is indeed the foundation for our more structure, scientific approach to politics and their far reaching effects. The origin of political science or at least the initial study of politics can be traced back to the ancient Indian civilization, with text in the Vedas and other writings testament to the advanced thinkers of that time (around 1200 B.C). Arthashastra, Chanakya’s treatise on politics, economics and sociology is a brilliant indicator of political studies in such ancient civilizations. Next to approach politics as a topic of study were the Greeks (Homer, Plato and Aristotle all made several contributions) and the Romans (Plutarch). In later times though, religions like Christianity and Islam became platforms for political studies.
Machiavelli, though, can be said to have introduced modern political science during the Italian Renaissance with his empirical hypothesis and observations.
The study of political science, at a university level, was first introduced in the United States, with several universities forming a department for political science. Columbia University first formed a School of Political Science in 1880, and in 1903, the American Political Science Association was founded, laying the building blocks for modern political science as we know it today.
